After crossing the Kaiwa channel from Molokai to Oahu on Sunday I am just about recovered. The 42 mile race took my crew of 9 paddlers around five and a half hours in a six man outrigger canoe (OC6).
Couple days later I am feeling just about back to normal. Legs and upper body still bit sore but doing okay. With much more free time now the oc6 season is done, it is time to relax for a few days and start thinking about training for the upcoming race schedule. After paddling the 6man season from regatta through to distance I have learned to importance of staying motivated. There were times during the season that the practice schedule got so intense and team motivation diminished, it was difficult to reach down and keep going.
After speaking to other paddlers and coaches they recommended a variety of cross training activities in order to not burn out on paddling. Running, swimming, biking, surfing and SUP will be some of the cross training activities.
Also, working with personal trainers and physical therapists early on before the season starts to stay healthy. I will be training with other paddlers doing cross fit style work outs and downwind runs.
Schedule to come soon.
