After crossing the Kaiwa channel from Molokai to Oahu on Sunday I am just about recovered. The 42 mile race took my crew of 9 paddlers around five and a half hours in a six man outrigger canoe (OC6).
Couple days later I am feeling just about back to normal. Legs and upper body still bit sore but doing okay. With much more free time now the oc6 season is done, it is time to relax for a few days and start thinking about training for the upcoming race schedule. After paddling the 6man season from regatta through to distance I have learned to importance of staying motivated. There were times during the season that the practice schedule got so intense and team motivation diminished, it was difficult to reach down and keep going.
After speaking to other paddlers and coaches they recommended a variety of cross training activities in order to not burn out on paddling. Running, swimming, biking, surfing and SUP will be some of the cross training activities.
Also, working with personal trainers and physical therapists early on before the season starts to stay healthy. I will be training with other paddlers doing cross fit style work outs and downwind runs.
Schedule to come soon.

Preping for Race Season
Coming from a back ground of extreme sports, I usually go out and have fun. In the past I have used training as a tool to get better personally and push my self to go harder on the motocross track or in the ocean.
In years past I have never had the time to really commit to a race series because of work and school obligations. For winter 2011 through spring 2012, I have decided to take racing seriously and see just how much I can accomplish. My last post shows the races that I plan on competing in.
I plan to document my training schedules, diet, and daily routine to have for my personal reference and for others to use as a tool for their own athletic goals. Knowing just how hard it is to balance racing and work I hope to stick to it and avoid injury to make it through the entire race series. In the past I have faced challenges paying for the series and staying healthy. When I have tried in the past with motocross racing, the costs became too great to finish the season. With oc1 and SUP I hope that costs will be lower. With sponsors for SUP like Pau Hana Surf Supply and Flip Flop Shops Waikiki, I will be able to cut some costs.
Stay tunned to details on how things are going.. Aloha!
